The Sweet Start of Sugar Rush

Sugar Rush might look like your average coffee shop. But it was never just about coffee. It began with heartbreak, grew through hope, and stands today as a tribute to the love that shaped the family behind it.

Sugar Rush wasn’t born from a business plan. It came to life in the middle of one of the family’s hardest seasons, a time when life felt like it was unraveling.

In 2020, Daniel and Beth lost their grandfather to dementia. Their entire family leapt into action when they found out siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandkids, each stepping up in their own way. Whether it was helping with care, checking in, or simply showing up with love and support, no one waited to be asked. That kind of compassion and loyalty runs deep in their family. Loving deeply isn’t a choice for them; it’s in their DNA.

So, when Daniel and Beth’s mom began showing the same heartbreaking signs, they knew what to do. Beth and Daniel became her primary caregivers without hesitation.

At first, Beth drove back and forth two and a half hours each way, several times a week, to help. But it quickly became clear this was more than a part-time need. She and her daughter moved to Marshall to be closer. With their mom living with Daniel and Beth nearby, they walked the caregiving journey side by side.

Daniel worked full-time while Beth worked part-time, and they spent nearly every other moment by their mom’s side ensuring she was never alone. They tag-teamed the challenges with grace, love, and determination.

Brian became a daily presence in their mother’s life, always patient and steady. Chris became the quiet rock behind it all. Though having his mother-in-law living in the house 24/7 wasn’t easy, his love for her never wavered.

Together, they formed a circle of care, each one contributing what they could, when they could, grounded by the belief that their mom deserved the best.

Despite the difficulty, there was still so much joy. The family spent countless hours in the pool and hot tub, took trips to waterparks, and even convinced their mom to try some of the water slides. They didn’t just care for her, they lived fully with her, laughing and making memories that would last a lifetime.

Amid the tough days came a sweet surprise: their mom developed a mischievous sweet tooth. Candy turned up in coat pockets, jewelry boxes, even under her bed. It became a running joke and a treasured reminder of her playful spirit. Her love of sweets would later inspire the name Sugar Rush.

Even with her dementia diagnosis, she remained remarkably aware for much of her journey. She knew names, addresses, and even kept up with current events. It wasn’t her memory that was most challenging, it was the shifts in mood and behavior, typical with Lewy body dementia. Her memory began to fade near the very end, when her light dimmed. But until those final weeks, you could still see her.

That same year, a series of health issues led to a stay in a care facility. What was intended as a temporary solution slowly became a longer-term step. It was difficult, but it also gave the family its first real chance to pause and breathe.

In that space full of grief, love, and reflection Sugar Rush was born. It became a creative outlet, a labor of love, and a way to channel their shared experience into something meaningful.

Sugar Rush officially launched in April 2024 as a ghost kitchen on DoorDash and the community response was overwhelming. That encouragement led to their next big step, launching their food truck at the end of May 2024.

Just a couple of months later, in July 2024, their mom passed away. It was a heartbreaking loss, but by then, Sugar Rush had already taken root, built on the very values, spirit, and energy that came from her. Every cup served now carries a part of her. Every act of kindness, every sweet treat, every smile it all reflects her legacy.

Then in November 2024, they opened their first brick-and-mortar café.

Sugar Rush is now more than they ever imagined not just a place for great coffee, but a space for connection. A place infused with love, where the family’s story lives on in every cup.

They take pride in every ingredient, every partnership, and every detail. Coffee beans are roasted locally, and whenever possible, products are sourced from their own community. Quality isn’t just a standard, it’s a reflection of the care they believe everyone deserves.

Sugar Rush isn’t just selling drinks, they’re sharing a legacy, a space, a feeling.
